Population: (1996 estimate). 5,445,000; 8.0 persons per square mile (3.1 persons per square kilometer); 86.0 percent urban, 14.0 percent rural (1995 estimate).
Major Language: Arabic (official).
Major Religion: Islam (official).
Literacy: 76.2 percent.
Form of Government: Socialist state.
Major Cities (1988 estimate): Tripoli (591,100), Banghazi (446,250), Misratah (121,700), Az-Zawiyah (89,338).
Chief Manufactured and Mined Products: Distillate fuel, cement, gasoline, jet fuel, crude steel, meat, lime, gypsum, salt, crude petroleum, natural gas.
Chief Agricultural Products: Crops--watermelons, wheat, barley, tomatoes, potatoes, oranges, onions, dates, olives, almonds, lemons and limes. Livestock--sheep, goats, camels, cattle, chickens.
